Sleep

This one's about the night in a few cities.

It's quiet
Not a sound on the road
Except the tinkling bell
Of a bicycle with its load

The rumbling of the engine
of an auto far away
The rustling of the leaves
On the trees as they sway

There's no light either
In any window
Everyone's asleep
Save for a lone window's glow

Kolkata is this city's name
Here's another city not quite the same.

It's noisy.
A motorcycle's grumbling
nearby on the road
a taxi engine's grumbling

E.D.M. beats
from a party nearby
and firecrackers bursting
high up in the sky

Nearly every light's on
In every window here
The city that never sleeps
The name is clear.

This loud city's name is Bombay
They party all night and work all day.

So in the small hours of the morning
When the sun around the edges of the evening does creep.
Mumbai is awake
But Kolkata is asleep

  1. Amazing juxtaposition. Two cities with clear characters. Loved the night imagery.
